The dreaded gastro! It’s inedible. Although common, it can be concerning, especially when you have a bubba. Here are some handy tips to help keep bub hydrated.
Hydration Options
During gastro, it's crucial to offer fluids to keep your bub hydrated. It’s the most important treatment. Here are some good options to try
- Water
- Rehydration solutions or icypoles (HYDRAltye, Pedialyte, Gastrolyte, Repalyte)
- Hydramama for a sugar free rehydration solution option
- Diluted apple juice - 50/50
- Homemade icy poles with diluted juice
If you are nursing, keep breastfeeding your baby. If you're using formula, offer clear fluids to your baby for the initial 12 hours. Afterward, resume their regular formula, providing it in smaller, more frequent feedings.
Prioritising Hydration
The best fluid is the one your bub will take. The most important thing is to ensure your child stays hydrated. Offer small amounts of fluid regularly, especially if they are refusing to drink or showing signs of dehydration. Signs of dehydration include fewer wet nappies, dark yellow or brown urine, dry lips, or a pale and floppy appearance.
When to Seek Medical Advice
In some cases, medical attention may be necessary to manage gastro and dehydration effectively.
- If your child is under 6 months, not drinking, or showing signs of dehydration, seek medical support promptly.
- Other concerning symptoms include persistent diarrhoea, blood in the stool, or green vomit.
- You are worried for any other reason.
Foods for Hungry Bubs During Gastro
While the focus should be on hydration if bub is hungry they can absolutely eat! Recent research has shown that there is no strict diet or foods that you have to stick too. But if you think about when you are sick, you only feel like plain food. Here are some gentle options to consider when they are in the midst of gastro.
Bland and Digestible Choices
During gastro, your bub may not feel like eating much, especially if they are experiencing vomiting. Here are some foods that they may be able to tolerate.
- Bread
- Potato
- Banana
- Rice
- Chicken Broth
Gradual Return to Regular Diet
Once your bub’s appetite returns and they start feeling better, you can resume their regular diet. Focus on nourishing foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and carbohydrates will support their recovery.
Prevent the spread
Preventing the spread of gastroenteritis to other people is crucial. Here are some preventive measures to take:
- Make sure that everyone in the household practises good hand hygiene by washing their hands regularly. This is especially important after using the toilet and before eating.
- Remember to wash your bubs hands with warm water and soap regularly
- Prioritise cleanliness by washing your hands before feeding your bub and after changing their diapers. Additionally, regularly clean surfaces such as kitchen countertops, toys, toilet seats, changing tables, and faucets to minimise the risk of spreading infection within the home.
- To prevent further transmission of the illness, keep your bub away from others until 48 hours after their symptoms have ceased. If their symptoms persist, it's advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
- For the safety of others, refrain from sending your bub to childcare or school until at least 48 hours after their symptoms have resolved.
