There seems to be a big deal made about introducing allergens. This isn’t meant to freak you out — it’s just that research shows introducing them before your baby turns 1 can actually lower the risk of developing allergies. Plus, introducing them one at a time makes it easier to pinpoint the culprit if there is a reaction. Remember, most reactions are mild, severe reactions are rare. You’re probably still feeling anxious though so hopefully, we can answer most of your questions here and help put your mind at ease.
It’s understandable to feel anxious about introducing allergens, especially peanuts, but it’s not necessary to do it in the hospital car park. Reactions don’t always happen on the first exposure, which is why we recommended introducing each allergen 3 times on its own. Most food allergy reactions are mild, and deaths from anaphylaxis are rare. Introducing allergens at home and monitoring closely is generally safe and less stressful than constantly going to the hospital.
However, if you’re extremely worried, consult with your GP beforehand. They can help create a plan to introduce allergens. If you have a family history of any allergies then you must speak to your GP before introducing allergens.
Mild Reactions:
Severe Reactions (Call 000):
What If I Still Can’t Tell If It’s A Severe Reaction? If you’re unsure whether a reaction is severe, don’t hesitate to call 000. They can guide you on the best course of action and provide immediate support. Trust your instincts — if you feel something is off, it’s always better to seek immediate help.
If it’s not an emergency and bub seems otherwise well, but you want to see someone that day, consider visiting an urgent care clinic. These clinics are typically walk-in and can offer immediate attention. You can find the nearest one here: Urgent Care Clinics.
If you ever suspect anaphylaxis, call 000 immediately. Additionally, keeping a list of local urgent care centres and their contact information on your phone can be useful in case you need it quickly.
Morning Introductions: Start introducing new allergens in the morning for the first three exposures.Do it at least 2 hours before nap time to give yourself enough time to monitor for any reactions. This timing also provides better access to medical assistance if needed. It’s a good idea to keep a record of each introduction and any reactions observed.
Patch Test: Before giving a full serving, rub a tiny amount of the allergen on the INSIDE of your baby’s lip. Wait a few minutes to see if there’s any redness, swelling, or hives. If everything looks fine, you can offer a ¼ teaspoon of the allergen mixed into a previously tolerated puree. This method might help catch a mild reaction, although it won’t prevent severe reactions.
Important Note: Never rub food directly onto your baby’s skin, as this can increase the risk of a reaction. Always ensure your hands and any utensils used are clean.
Take a First Aid/CPR Course: Enrolling in a First Aid or CPR course will give you the skills and confidence to handle emergencies, including severe allergic reactions. Knowing what to do can significantly reduce your anxiety.
Trust Emergency Services: Remember, babies are a top priority in emergencies, and ambulance response times are typically very quick. Knowing that help is readily available can provide peace of mind.
Be Prepared and Stay Calm: Keeping a record of allergens introduced and any reactions can help you stay organised. Also, staying calm and collected will help you respond effectively if a reaction does occur.
