All babies develop at slightly different rates and while solids should be introduced around 6 months (not before four months), the biggest determinant of readiness should be these 4 key indicators!
1. Good neck and head control
2. Showing an interest in your food / reaching
3. Opens mouth if you bring spoon near
4. Reduced prominence of tongue-thrust reflex
If your baby is nearing 7 months and is not showing any of the signs of readiness, you should check in with your healthcare professional to make sure there is nothing else going on (eg. An undetected tongue-tie).
Your baby will always be the biggest guide so try not to get too caught up on what other babies of similar age are doing or even what a previous child of yours has done.
Let your Bub run their own race!
Are you eagerly awaiting the moment when you can finally stop squishing blueberries and slicing grapes for your little one? Or perhaps you're curious about when it's safe to introduce raw apple and carrot into their diet? As a rule of thumb, anything smaller than a 20 cent coin poses a choking hazard to kids under 4. While there are definite NO GO’s under this age, some foods become safer as your child's chewing and swallowing skills improve. Let's explore the transition from cautious squishing to confident munching, ensuring a safe and enjoyable food journey for your little one.
